SynopsisSweet Mara Synopsis
Driven by the unstoppable desire for freedom, Stefan narrowly escapes, making his way to America. Mara, his wife and their two young boys (Sammy and Daniel) are left behind to endure the persecution of the Communist government.
A terrible accident injures Sammy, forcing Mara to bring her estranged father, Sever, back into her life to watch the children while she is at work. To her dismay, the boys form an affectionate bond with her father, whom she cannot forgive for ruining her dreams of becoming a world class violinist, thus furthering her torment and sense of isolation and loneliness.The difficulties continue as Mara is interrogated by the Securitate, “promoted” from her accounting job and forced into manual labor.
Mara’s one hope during her unending trials seems to be her uncle, Peter, a high level party official, who uses his influence to set up violin lessons for Sammy with Emil Enescu, the country’s most respected and adored world class violinist and Mara’s childhood sweetheart.
As conditions in Romania continue to deteriorate, the country approaches the bloodiest anti-communist revolution of the last fifty years. Mara’s hope of reuniting with her husband in America fades as new obstacles and old temptations arise.
Mara and the boys are finally delivered in their darkest hours in the midst of betrayal, abuse and blackmail. In the midst of communist oppression and deception she is forced to face her past and develops a forgiving heart with great hope for the future.
