To date American filmmakers haven’t even touched the suffering inflicted by communism on hundreds of millions of people. The timing of this film and its release will come on the twenty year anniversary of the Revolution which will generate a renewed interest in the struggle of the Romanian people who survived years of torture, and bring the abstract of communism into an intensely moving experience for the American and International audience.
The screenplay, SWEET MARA is the result of ten years of passionate work to create an artistic vision that incorporates the fundamental Christian concepts of forgiveness and redemption, while, at the same time, telling a powerful and moving story about man’s desire for freedom in the midst of political and religious oppression under a repressive totalitarian regime.
SWEET MARA is an epic drama and love story based on true events, set against the paranoid political background of Romania in the late 1980’s, a time when government persecution threatened daily life and forced average citizens to conceal their beliefs in order to survive under Ceausescu’s tyrannical regime; with vivid characters telling a bitter-sweet, believable and touching story of father-daughter love in the midst of communist inflicted terror.
